It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite this supplication: "O Allah! Forgive me for what I have sent forth, and what I have delayed, and what I have done secretly, and what I have done openly, and my excesses, and whatever You know better about me than I do. You are the One Who brings forward and You are the One Who delays. There is no deity worthy of worship except You." (O Allah! Forgive for me those sins which I have committed earlier, which I will commit later, which I have committed secretly, which I have committed openly, in which I have exceeded the limits, and those sins which You know better than me. You are the One Who brings forward and You are the One Who delays, and there is no true deity except You.)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was infallible (ma'soom), but he would seek forgiveness (istighfar) in order to remove various ailments and veils from the purity of the heart. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam desired that his presence before Allah Ta'ala be perpetual; however, when he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would turn his attention to human necessities, such as eating and drinking, which would cause a decrease in the perfection of that presence, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would rectify this state through seeking forgiveness. Furthermore, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would seek forgiveness to express servitude ('ubudiyyah) and humility, to become a supplicant to the grace of his Lord Ta'ala, and to teach his ummah (community) as well.
