It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you hear the barking of dogs or the braying of donkeys at night, seek refuge with Allah, for they see things which you do not see. When people have gone to sleep, do not go outside, for Allah the Exalted spreads various creatures during the night. And close the doors by mentioning the name of Allah, for Satan does not open a door that has been closed with the name of Allah. Tie the mouths of water skins, cover the pitchers, and turn the vessels upside down.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The barking of dogs and the braying of donkeys have been specifically mentioned in connection with the night because, during the night, there is an abundance of the dispersion of devils; otherwise, during the day as well, when hearing these sounds, one should recite the ta‘awwudh (seeking refuge with Allah).
