Hadith 539

It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Uwain bin Sa‘idah Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to those people in the Mosque of Quba and said: “Indeed, Allah Almighty has mentioned your mosque and praised you well regarding purity, so what is this cleanliness that you adopt?” They said: “By Allah! O Messenger of Allah! There is nothing in our knowledge regarding this matter, except that the Jews were our neighbors and they used to wash their backsides after relieving themselves, so we also started washing that part like them.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari, Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah, and Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, who say: When this verse {فِیْہِ رِجَالٌ یُّحِبُّوْنَ أَنْ یَّتَطَہَّرُوْا وَاللّٰہُ یُحِبُّ الْمُطَّہِّرِیْنَ} was revealed, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O group of Ansar! Indeed, Allah has praised you regarding purification, so what is your purification?” They said: “We perform ablution (wudu) for prayer, perform ritual bath (ghusl) after major impurity (janabah), and cleanse ourselves with water after relieving ourselves.” He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “That is it, so adhere to it.” … O group of Ansar! Indeed, Allah has praised you in the matter of purification, so what is your purification? They said: We perform ablution for prayer, perform ritual bath after major impurity, and cleanse ourselves with water after relieving ourselves. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: So it is that (the last mentioned), so adhere to it. (Ibn Majah: 355)

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “It was revealed regarding the people of Quba’ {فِیْہِ رِجَالٌ یُّحِبُّوْنَ أَنْ یَّتَطَہَّرُوْا وَاللّٰہُ یُحِبُّ الْمُطَّہِّرِیْنَ}.” … This verse was revealed about the people of Quba’: (In it are men who love to purify themselves, and Allah loves those who purify themselves). In reality, those people used to cleanse themselves with water after relieving themselves, so this verse was revealed about them. (Ibn Majah: 357, Tirmidhi: 3100)

People of sound nature know what the difference is between cleansing oneself with water and with stones; in any case, both methods are Sunnah, and cleansing with water is superior. Now Allah the Exalted has made this facility common, so people should know that they are using the superior method.
