Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A vow is only in that matter through which the pleasure of Allah Almighty is sought, and there is no oath in severing ties of kinship.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … That is, an oath taken for the purpose of severing ties of kinship should not be fulfilled. A person, through an oath (qasam) or a vow (nadhar), makes something obligatory upon himself in which there is the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala, for example, performing prayer (salah), engaging in remembrance (dhikr), fasting (sawm), and giving charity (sadaqah), etc.
