It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to sell ummahat al-awlad (slave women who had borne children to their masters).

Benefits: … Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr radi Allahu anhu says: "A man died, and he made a bequest to me. Among the things he bequeathed was his umm walad (slave woman who had borne him a child) and a free wife. There arose a dispute between the umm walad and the wife. The wife said to her: 'O lowly woman! Tomorrow your ear will be seized and you will be sold in the market!' She (the umm walad) mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he said: 'The umm walad is not to be sold.' …
A man passed away, and among the wealth he had made me executor over, there was his umm walad and his free wife. A dispute arose between the umm walad and the wife. The wife said: 'O vile woman! Soon your ear will be seized and you will be sold in the market.' She reported this to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and he said: 'The umm walad is not to be sold.'
