Hadith 5284

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said: A mukatab (contracted slave) will be given blood money in proportion to the amount he has paid.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Can a slave who has entered into a contract of manumission (mukatabah) be sold after the contract? Apparently, this is an agreement that cannot be broken, except if the slave himself consents, as he is the one who benefits from this contract. And it is clear that he will only consent if he is assured of immediate freedom. In such a case, when the slave is gaining more benefit than from the contract and both parties are agreeable, then there is no harm in selling him for the sake of immediate freedom, as mentioned in Hadith number (5289). However, the owners cannot sell him to someone else without his consent for their own benefit, because this would be treachery and a breach of promise, in which the government can intervene. As in accordance with this very hadith, the condition set by the owners was rejected by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
