It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I am like a father to you and I teach you just as a father does. So when any man goes to relieve himself, he should neither face the Qiblah nor turn his back towards it, and no man should perform istinja (cleaning) with less than three stones."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In these ahadith, it is clearly prohibited to suffice with less than three stones; if more stones are needed, then the odd number should still be observed. Imam Ahmad and Imam Shafi'i have declared the use of at least three stones to be obligatory. Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Malik, in this regard, have not considered the number to be significant; however, they have maintained the observance of an odd number, whether it be one or three. But their opinion is not supported by these blessed ahadith.
