Hadith 517

Umar bin Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, said: For such a long time, I have not turned my private parts towards the Qiblah, but Iraq bin Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, narrated that Sayyida Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: When the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, learned that people disliked facing the Qiblah, he, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered that “his, peace and blessings be upon him, latrine be constructed facing the Qiblah.” In another narration: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Have people started thinking like this? Then turn my seat towards the Qiblah.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From the authentic ahadith of this chapter, it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, during the act of relieving himself, at times faced towards the qiblah and at times had his back towards it, whereas in the ahadith of the previous chapter, such an action is prohibited. To resolve this apparent contradiction, many opinions have been gathered. The preferred view is that in this state, it is recommended (mustahabb) not to face towards or turn one's back to the qiblah; however, if there is a necessity, then one should act upon the practical concession of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. In two ahadith, there is no restriction regarding buildings, therefore, it is not correct to interpret all the narrations as being limited to buildings.
