It is narrated from ‘Ikrimah that the master of the Messenger, Sayyiduna Abu Rafi‘ (may Allah be pleased with him), said: I was the slave of Sayyiduna ‘Abbas bin ‘Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). Islam had entered among us; I too had become Muslim, Sayyidah Umm Fadl (may Allah be pleased with her) had also become Muslim, and Sayyiduna ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) had also embraced Islam. However, he feared his people, so he concealed his Islam. The enemy of Allah, Abu Lahab, stayed behind from the Battle of Badr and sent in his place ‘As bin Hisham bin Mughirah. They did as such: whoever could not be present himself, sent a warrior in his place. When the good news reached us (that in the Battle of Badr, you ﷺ had achieved victory) and Allah Almighty had humiliated and disgraced the enemy, we felt within ourselves that we had become strong... Then he mentioned the entire hadith... Some matters on this topic are in Ya‘qub’s book, but they are mursal and have no chain of narration. Nevertheless, a brother from Banu Salim said: Among the captives was Abu Wada‘ah bin Sabirah Sahmi. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said about him: He has an intelligent merchant son in Makkah, who is very wealthy. It seems he will come to me with his father’s ransom. Meanwhile, the Quraysh said: Do not hasten in paying the ransom for your captives, so that Muhammad (ﷺ) and his companions do not increase the ransom upon you. That same merchant, Mutlib bin Abu Wada‘ah, said: You are right, do as such. But he himself secretly set out at night, reached Madinah Munawwarah, paid four thousand dirhams as ransom, and freed his father. Then he took him away and brought the ransom for Makraz bin Hafs and Suhail bin ‘Amr. Malik bin Dakhshun, a brother from Banu Malik bin ‘Awf, had detained him.
