Hadith 5088

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the person from Banu Salamah who captured Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) was Sayyiduna Abu Yasar Ka'b bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Abu Yasar! How did you capture him? He replied: A man helped me, the like of whom I had never seen before nor after; his appearance was such and such. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: An honored angel helped you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): O Abbas! Now pay the ransom for yourself, your nephew Aqeel bin Abi Talib, Naufal bin Harith, and your ally from Banu Harith, Utbah bin Jahdam. But he refused to do so and said: I had accepted Islam before this, these people forced me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah Almighty knows your matter best; if what you are saying is true, then Allah Almighty will reward you for it. As for the apparent matter, it seems that you were against us, so pay the ransom for yourself. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken from him gold equal to the weight of twenty uqiyah, so he said: O Messenger of Allah! Count that gold as part of my ransom. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No, it will not be so, because that is something Allah Almighty has given us from you. He said: Then I have no wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Where is the wealth that you left in Makkah with Umm Fadl when you departed from Makkah, and at that time only you two were present, no one else was with you? You said to Umm Fadl: If I die on this journey, then this much is for Fadl, this much for Qutham, and this much for Abdullah? Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Him Who sent you with the truth! No one knew of this except me and Umm Fadl, and indeed I know that you are the Messenger of Allah.
