It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hanzalah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man greeted the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam after he had urinated, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to him until he struck his hand on the wall and performed tayammum. (Then he replied to the salam.)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The summary of the hadiths mentioned in this chapter and other narrations on this subject is that when a person is relieving himself, one should not greet him with salam; otherwise, he will not be deserving of a reply. The evidence for this has already been discussed at the end of the previous chapter. It is unanimously permissible to reply to salam and to engage in remembrance (dhikr) without ablution (wudu); however, it is preferable and more virtuous to observe ablution for the remembrance of Allah.
