Hadith 50

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: O son of Adam! If you commit sins equal to the fill of the earth, but do not associate partners with Me, I will grant you forgiveness equal to the fill of the earth." In one narration, it is stated: By «قُرَابُ الْأَرْضِ» is meant the fill of the earth.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … We have already stated that these ahadith indicate the virtue of tawhid (monotheism) and the condemnation of shirk (polytheism), but their implication is not that, in light of these pleasing statements, we should refrain from righteous deeds and adopt a course of committing evil deeds. Consider the following points:

٭ The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself, in light of these instructions, did not allow the difficult routine of righteous deeds to be affected.
٭ The first listeners of these blessed ahadith were the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum, but these ahadith did not cause any change in their practical lives.
٭ If, during the Prophetic era, such crimes were committed by the sanctified souls of the Companions for which legal punishments (hudud) are prescribed, then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam enforced those punishments upon them.
٭ It is established from countless legal texts (nusus shar‘iyyah) that many monotheists (muwahhidin) will be punished at the time of death, in the grave, on the Day of Resurrection, and in the form of Hell, but ultimately they will reach Paradise.
٭ In many verses and ahadith, faith (iman) and righteous deeds (amal salih) have been stipulated as conditions for salvation.
٭ According to ahadith numbers (31, 45), there is an instruction to keep these ahadith hidden from those people whose inclination towards righteous deeds might decrease due to these glad tidings.

Thus, the summary of the discussion is that the blessed ahadith mentioned in this chapter are true, and the reward and recompense stated therein on account of tawhid and the words of tawhid are also true, and the people of faith should, by uttering these words, have good hope that, insha Allah, they will be among their recipients. However, along with this, the inclination to perform good deeds and to abstain from evil should not decrease.
