Hadith 4968

عَنْ مَعْقِلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ اسْتَعْمَلَ النُّعْمَانَ بْنَ مُقَرِّنٍ، فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ، قَالَ يَعْنِي النُّعْمَانَ: وَلَكِنِّي شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكَانَ إِذَا لَمْ يُقَاتِلْ أَوَّلَ النَّهَارِ أَخَّرَ الْقِتَالَ حَتَّى تَزُولَ الشَّمْسُ، وَتَهُبَّ الرِّيَاحُ، وَيَنْزِلَ النَّصْرُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ma’qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna Nu’man bin Muqarrin (may Allah be pleased with him) as a governor, … then the rest of the hadith is mentioned … , Sayyiduna Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But I was present with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), if he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not fight at the beginning of the day, then he would delay the battle until the sun had declined, the winds had started to blow, and the descent of support and help had begun.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This is a time of great alertness; only a warrior (mujahid) can describe this state. However, the selection of this time will only be made when it is in accordance with the will of the commander of the Muslim army and there is no impediment. Otherwise, if the enemy initiates battle or there appears to be a greater benefit in fighting at another time, then battle will be engaged at that time. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam attacked Banu Mustaliq at night.
