A woman from Banu Ghifar (Sayyida Umm Ziyad Ashja’i) narrates: She says, I, along with some women from Banu Ghifar, came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and we said to him: O Messenger of Allah! We also wish to go out with you in that direction. At that time, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was heading towards Khaybar. We will treat the wounded and help the Muslims as much as we can. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Go forth with the blessing of Allah. So we set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I was a young girl, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seated me on the back part of his saddle on his mount. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted in the morning, made the camel sit, and I also got down from the back part of the saddle. Suddenly, I saw that there was blood flowing from me onto it; this was my first menstruation. I became frightened, jumped towards the she-camel, and felt shy. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saw me and the blood that was with me, he said: What has happened to you? Perhaps you have started menstruating? I said: Yes. He said: Then take care of yourself, take a vessel of water, put salt in it, and wash the blood from the saddle, then mount your ride again. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, conquered Khaybar, he also gave us a small share from the spoils of war. This necklace that you see around my neck, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took it and gave it to me, and he himself placed it around my neck with his own hand. By Allah! This necklace will never be separated from me. The narrator says: Then this necklace remained around her neck until her death, and she had willed that it be buried with her. Also, whenever this woman had her period afterwards, when purifying herself, she would put salt in the water, and she had also willed that salt be put in the water for her ritual bath.
