Hadith 4920

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Jahimah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! I want to go for jihad and I have come to consult you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Is your mother alive? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Then stay with her, for indeed Paradise is at her feet. Then he repeated the same thing in different gatherings a second and then a third time.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Paradise is under the feet of the mother” is an idiom; the intent is that by serving her, you will attain Paradise. Furthermore, serving her is also your obligation, whereas Paradise can also be attained through jihad, but that is not obligatory upon you. Therefore, fulfill your obligation and attain Paradise. A Muslim’s objective should be to attain the pleasure of Allah Ta‘ala; whether that is achieved through jihad according to the Shari‘ah rulings, or through an easier deed.
