It is narrated from Sayyiduna ‘Irbaad bin Saariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The martyrs and those who die a natural death on their beds will dispute before Allah Almighty about those people who die due to plague. The martyrs will say: These are our brothers and were martyred like us. Those who died on their beds will say: These are our brothers and died a natural death on their beds just as we did. Allah Almighty, while deciding, will say: You people look at their wounds; if their wounds are similar to the wounds of the martyrs, then they are among them and with them. Thus, their wounds will be similar to the wounds of the martyrs.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The basis of this dispute is not envy or the like; rather, the martyrs will desire that the rank of those who die from plague be elevated, so that they may be with them, and those who die on their beds will wish that if the rank of martyrdom is being granted to them, then they too should receive it, because in terms of death, they are alike. In other words, this is emulation (rishk), and emulation is permissible.
