Hadith 4895

Abu Muhammad, who is among the companions of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that he related this: The martyrs were mentioned in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Most of the martyrs of my Ummah will be those of the beds, and among those killed between two rows, there are many whose intentions are best known by Allah Almighty.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The martyrs of the beds are those people who, by avoiding prohibitions (muharramat) and disliked acts (makruhat), and by fulfilling obligations (wajibat) and recommended acts (mustahabbat), strive against their own souls (jihad al-nafs) and do not allow Satan to come near them. In any case, combat and jihad with the sword (jihad bil-sayf) have their own virtue. It is correct that only Allah knows whose intention is to strive in His path, because intention is a hidden matter; people see the outward, and Allah, exalted is He, sees the heart as well. The virtue will be attained only by the one who goes out for jihad purely for the sake of Allah. If any other impurity enters, then jihad will become a means to Hell instead of Paradise.
