It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The group that fights in the way of Allah and also acquires spoils of war hastens to receive two-thirds of the reward that is to be given in the Hereafter; one-third of the reward remains. And if they do not acquire spoils of war, then their reward in the Hereafter is complete.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … It is understood from this that the one who acquires spoils of war (ghanimah) is deserving of a lesser reward, even if his intention was not for the spoils; the full reward is only for the one who did not obtain any worldly benefit whatsoever. However, the person who fights in jihad solely for the sake of acquiring spoils will be deprived of reward, whether he obtains the spoils or not; rather, he will be deserving of punishment.
