عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ جَاءَ رَجُلٌ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ رَأَيْتَ الرَّجُلَ يُقَاتِلُ شُجَاعَةً وَيُقَاتِلُ حَمِيَّةً وَيُقَاتِلُ رِيَاءً فَأَيُّ ذَلِكَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! A man fights to show bravery, another out of zeal, and another for ostentation; which of these is in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Whoever fights so that the word of Allah may be exalted, he is in the way of Allah.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … By the word of Allah (kalimah), what is meant is His message and religion. Although sincerity of intention (ikhlas al-niyyah) holds a central position in every righteous deed, this blessed hadith is sufficient to determine the direction of the mujahid’s intention.
