Hadith 4777

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The worst name in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection, for which there will be shame, is that a man calls himself "Malikul-Amlak" (the king of kings).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Allah Ta'ala greatly loves humility and modesty, and severely dislikes pride, arrogance, and haughtiness. To be called "King of Kings" expresses arrogance rather than humility. Moreover, this attribute belongs solely to Allah Ta'ala; attributing it to others is not commendable in any respect. Imam Mubarakpuri rahimahullah said: Imam Humaydi has defined "akhna‘u" as "the most abased," and Imam Sufyan, by explaining "Malik al-Amlak" as "Shahan-e-Shah" (King of Kings), has pointed out that the meaning of the blessed hadith is not that only the phrase "Malik al-Amlak" is prohibited, but rather, any word in any language that carries such a meaning is, in light of this hadith, prohibited for use regarding the creation. From this hadith, it is understood that, due to the severe warning, naming someone "Malik al-Amlak" is haram (forbidden), and by analogy with this word, it is also prohibited to use names such as "Khaliq al-Khalq" (Creator of Creation), "Ahkam al-Hakimeen" (Most Just of Judges), "Sultan al-Salateen" (Sultan of Sultans), and "Amir al-Umara" (Commander of Commanders). In fact, it has also been said that those names which are exclusive to Allah Ta'ala, by analogy with this hadith, cannot be attributed to the creation, such as Rahman, Quddus, Jabbar.
