عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ كَانَ اسْمُ زَيْنَبَ بَرَّةَ فَسَمَّاهَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ زَيْنَبَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the name of Sayyidah Zainab was Barrah; the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, named her Zainab.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of "Barrah" is virtue or virtuous and righteous. According to the narration of Sahih Muslim, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) explained the reason for prohibiting this name by saying: ((Lā tuzakkū anfusakum wa-Allāhu a‘lamu bi-ahlil-birri minkum.)) … Do not declare your own selves as pure; Allah knows best who among you is truly virtuous.
