Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked towards Abu Abdur Hamid or Ibn Abdur Hamid, whose name was Muhammad. A man was abusing him and saying: "O Muhammad! May Allah do such and such to you, and such and such, and such and such." At that moment, the Commander of the Faithful said: "O Ibn Zaid! Come closer to me. Am I seeing that because of you, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is being insulted? No, by Allah, as long as you are alive, you will not be called Muhammad." Then he named him Abdur Rahman. Then the Commander of the Faithful sent a message to the Banu Talha that those among them whose names were Muhammad should change their names. There were a total of seven such individuals, and even the chief and elder among them was named Muhammad. Among them, Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Commander of the Faithful! I beseech you by Allah, do not change my name, because my name was given by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Go, I have no authority regarding the one whose name was given by Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) himself."
