It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about ‘Aqiqah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: Indeed, Allah Almighty dislikes disobedience to parents (‘uquq). It is as if he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked this word. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! We are asking you about when a child is born (the animal that is slaughtered on his behalf). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to offer a sacrifice on behalf of his child, let him do so. The detail is that for a boy, two equal animals from among goats or sheep, and for a girl, one. Then when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about Fara’, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Fara’ is a right, but if you leave that animal until its meat becomes hard, that is, until it becomes Ibn Makhad or Ibn Labun, then you give it in the way of Allah for riding or give it to widows, then this act is better than slaughtering it when its meat is still clinging to its hair. In this way, you would only pour out your pot and trouble your she-camel. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about ‘Atirah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Atirah is a right. A man asked Amr bin Shu’aib: What is ‘Atirah? He said: People used to slaughter a goat in the month of Rajab, cook it, eat it themselves, and feed others as well.
