Abu Ashad Salmi narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (Sayyiduna Abu al-Ma'la or Sayyiduna Amr bin Abasah), may Allah be pleased with him, who says: We were seven people in total with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He ordered us, and each of us collected one dirham, and with the seven dirhams we bought a sacrificial animal. But while informing the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, we said: O Messenger of Allah! We have bought a very expensive animal. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The most virtuous sacrifice is the one whose price is the highest and which is the fattest and healthiest. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered, and one man held the hind leg, another held the other hind leg, one held the front leg, another held the other front leg, one held one horn, and another held the other horn, and the seventh man slaughtered it, and all of us recited the takbeer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Now is an age of outward show and ostentation; many people who are heedless of the obligations and duties ordained by Allah Ta‘ala are seen performing sacrifices of expensive and even multiple animals. It cannot be stated explicitly that their action will be rendered void, but it is certainly advised that they should pay attention to purifying their intention—that is, they should reflect on what their true purpose is in performing this act. Is it to present a valuable animal in the path of Allah Ta‘ala, or is it a demand of their wealth, or is it to impress people, or is it for ostentation and display? They must ponder deeply on this point; otherwise, a counter-question may also be posed to them: You are heedless of the obligations and duties of Allah Ta‘ala, you commit prohibited acts, but when it comes to the matter of sacrifice, how is it that the love of Allah Ta‘ala suddenly comes to mind? The reason for this counter-question is that whoever seeks nearness to Allah Ta‘ala, the legal (shar‘i) ruling is that he should first abstain from prohibitions and fulfill the obligations, and then give attention to supererogatory (nafl) and recommended (mustahabb) acts.
