عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عُبَيْدَ بْنَ فَيْرُوزٍ مَوْلَى بَنِي شَيْبَانَ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ الْبَرَاءَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنِ الْأَضَاحِيِّ مَا نَهَى عَنْهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَا كَرِهَ فَقَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَوْ قَامَ فِينَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَيَدِي أَقْصَرُ مِنْ يَدِهِ فَقَالَ أَرْبَعٌ لَا تُجْزِئُ الْعَوْرَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ عَوَرُهَا وَالْمَرِيضَةُ الْبَيِّنُ مَرَضُهَا وَالْعَرْجَاءُ الْبَيِّنُ ظَلْعُهَا وَالْكَسِيرُ الَّتِي لَا تُنْقِي قَالَ قُلْتُ فَإِنِّي أَكْرَهُ أَنْ يَكُونَ فِي الْقَرْنِ نَقْصٌ أَوْ قَالَ فِي الْأُذُنِ نَقْصٌ أَوْ فِي السِّنِّ نَقْصٌ قَالَ مَا كَرِهْتَ فَدَعْهُ وَلَا تُحَرِّمْهُ عَلَى أَحَدٍ
Ubaid bin Firoz asked Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) about sacrificial animals: from which types of animals did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit and dislike? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among us and, gesturing with his hand in this manner—while my hand is smaller than his (peace and blessings be upon him)—he said: Four types of animals are not sufficient for sacrifice: (1) The cross-eyed one, whose cross-eyedness is obvious. (2) The sick one, whose sickness is obvious. (3) The lame one, whose lameness is obvious. (4) Such an emaciated animal that there is no marrow in its bones. I said: I also dislike defects in the horn, ear, or teeth. He said: Whatever you dislike, leave it, but do not declare it unlawful for others.
