حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ عَوْنٍ عَنْ أَبِي رَمْلَةَ حَدَّثَنَاهُ مِخْنَفُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ وَنَحْنُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ وَاقِفٌ بِعَرَفَاتٍ فَقَالَ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ إِنَّ عَلَى كُلِّ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ فِي كُلِّ عَامٍ أَضْحَاةً وَعَتِيرَةً قَالَ تَدْرُونَ مَا الْعَتِيرَةُ قَالَ ابْنُ عَوْنٍ فَلَا أَدْرِي مَا رَدُّوا قَالَ هَذِهِ الَّتِي يَقُولُ النَّاسُ الرَّجَبِيَّةُ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mukhnif bin Qais (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he was standing at Arafat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people! Every year, sacrifice (Qurbani) and ‘Atirah are obligatory upon every household. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you know what ‘Atirah is? Ibn ‘Aun, the narrator, says: I do not know what answer the people gave to this question. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is the same which people call Rajabiyyah.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Just as the injunctions of zakat and the Eid prayers were revealed in the 2nd year of Hijrah, the command of sacrifice (qurbani) was also revealed in the same year. The legitimacy of sacrifice is established by the Noble Qur’an, the hadith of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and the consensus (ijma‘) of the Ummah. Allah the Exalted says: {فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّکَ وَانْحَرْ} (“[O Prophet!] Pray to your Lord and sacrifice [an animal].” [Surah al-Kawthar: 2]) The discussion regarding ‘Atirah will come in its dedicated chapter.
