It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Zuhr prayer at the place of Dhul-Hulaifah. Then his camels were brought to him; he (peace and blessings be upon him) marked them on the right side of their humps, then wiped away the blood from it, and put collars of two pairs of sandals on them. Then his (peace and blessings be upon him) mount was brought, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it and it stood with him at the place of Baida, he (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the Talbiyah for Hajj.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Imam Nawawi said: Ish'ar is that a wound is inflicted on the right side of the camel’s hump with a spear or knife, and then the blood is wiped away. This serves as a sign that the animal is a hady (sacrificial animal for Hajj). If such an animal is lost, others themselves deliver it to the pilgrims; even thieves refrain from stealing it, and if it gets mixed with other camels, it can be recognized. This purpose can also be served by a collar, and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would also use it. In any case, ish'ar is a mark that does not disappear.
