Hadith 4556

It is narrated from Murrah Tayyib, he says: A companion narrated a hadith to me in this very room of mine and said that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah while riding a red-colored she-camel, whose ear was slit. In the sermon, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said: Today is the day of sacrifice and this is the day of the greater Hajj.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Every Hajj is called the Major Hajj (Hajj Akbar) and every Umrah is called the Minor Hajj (Hajj Asghar), and the Hajj is referred to as Hajj Akbar in order to distinguish it from Hajj Asghar, that is, Umrah. Furthermore, the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah is called the day of Hajj Akbar because most of the rites of Hajj are performed on this day. The popular belief that the Hajj which coincides with Friday is Hajj Akbar is merely a public opinion; this notion is baseless and has no evidence. Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin ‘Amr Muzani radi Allahu anhu says: “I saw the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam delivering a sermon to the people in Mina when the forenoon had risen, mounted on a white mule, and ‘Ali radi Allahu anhu was conveying his words to the people, while some people were standing and some were sitting.”
(Sunan Abu Dawud: 1956)
Benefits: … It is evident that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arranged a sermon on the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah for the education, training, and propagation of the legal rulings (ahkam shar‘iyyah) to the people.
