Hadith 4540

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah on the Day of Sacrifice, then returned and offered the Zuhr prayer in Mina.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this hadith it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, after returning from Makkah Mukarramah, performed the Zuhr prayer in Mina. However, in the hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu in Sahih Muslim, it is stated: ((Then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mounted (his ride) and proceeded to the House (Ka‘bah), performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah, and performed the Zuhr prayer in Makkah)). … That is, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mounted (his ride) and, after reaching Makkah from Mina, performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah and performed the Zuhr prayer in Makkah itself.

Imam Nawawi, reconciling and harmonizing between these two hadiths, said: The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the Tawaf al-Ifadah before the time of decline (zawal), then performed the Zuhr prayer at its earliest time in Makkah itself. However, when he returned to Mina and saw that the Companions had not yet performed the Zuhr prayer, and they requested that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam lead them in this prayer, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led them in two units (rak‘ahs) of voluntary prayer (nafl). (Some Companions thought that this was the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam Zuhr prayer.) And according to the narration of Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, on one occasion he led the prayer of fear (salat al-khawf) in this manner: he led one group in two rak‘ahs, which was his obligatory prayer, and then led the second group in two rak‘ahs, which was his voluntary prayer. (Sharh Muslim by al-Nawawi: 8/193)

Imam Ibn al-Mundhir has also said something similar. However, the reconciliation presented by Imam Shawkani is somewhat different. He says that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the Zuhr prayer in Makkah itself. When he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam returned to Mina, he saw that the Companions were performing the Zuhr prayer in congregation, so he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam joined them with the intention of performing a voluntary prayer (nafl), because he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had given the ruling that if a person has already performed the prayer, and then finds a congregation, he should join them (with the intention of nafl) and perform the prayer again.
