Hadith 4539

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qarib bin Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: O Allah! Forgive those who shave their heads. A man said: And those who shorten their hair? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said for the fourth time: And forgive those who shorten their hair as well. Sufyan was indicating with his hand towards smallness and scarcity, but when (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was mentioning those who shave their heads) he was indicating with his hand towards abundance.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The words of the supplication of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and their quantity are before us: he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam supplicated two or three times for those who shaved their heads, and once for those who trimmed their hair. However, from the manner of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, it was apparent that he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was supplicating for the former group with great eagerness and expansiveness of heart, whereas for the latter group, he merely uttered supplicatory words in a simple manner. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((Laysa ‘ala al-nisa’ al-halq, innama ‘ala al-nisa’ al-taqsir.)) … “Shaving the head is not for women; rather, for women it is only trimming (taqsir).” (Abu Dawud: 1985) The general view of the scholars is that women should have their hair trimmed equal to the tips of their fingers.
