Hadith 4529

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who says: On the day of Hudaybiyyah, some people shaved their heads and some shortened their hair. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? He, peace and blessings be upon him, again said: May Allah have mercy on those who shave their heads. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! And those who shorten their hair? This time, he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: And may Allah have mercy on those who shorten their hair as well. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the reason that you expressed greater mercy for those who shaved their heads? He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: They did not have any doubt. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went away.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that “those who shaved their heads had no doubt” means that they considered following the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam itself to be the best course and had no doubt in this matter. However, those who had their hair shortened (taqsir), outwardly it appears as if they had some doubt regarding the action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, since they opted for shortening and left the action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. It should be clear that at this point, only the virtue of those who shaved their heads is being mentioned, as they followed the action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, whereas those who had their hair shortened also benefited from the concession granted by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, while understanding that shaving the head is superior. However, outwardly, they did not fulfill the requirements of this superiority.
