Hadith 4478

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the practice of racing mounts was initiated by the Bedouins. They would stand on both sides of the path where other people passed, and they would hang sticks, quivers, and large bowls from their mounts. Then, when they moved, these items would make noises, and the animals, upon hearing these sounds, would start running fast. However, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seen on this occasion pulling the reins of his she-camel towards himself to restrain her, so that the camel’s ears were touching her shoulder bone, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was gesturing with his hand and saying: O people! Walk calmly, O people! Adhere to tranquility.
