Hadith 4477

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: Sayyiduna Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) informed me, while he was riding behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on his mount on the return from Arafah. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that people were urging their mounts to run fast, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a caller to announce: Racing horses and camels is not righteousness; proceed calmly.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The words “min ‘Arafah” in this narration are the result of an error by a narrator; originally, the words were: “min Jam‘.” The reason for this is that, according to the reliable narrations of Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad, and others, the one who sat behind the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam from ‘Arafah to Muzdalifah was Sayyiduna Usamah radi Allahu anhu, and from Muzdalifah onward it was Sayyiduna Fadl ibn ‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu. Furthermore, from other narrations in Musnad Ahmad, it is evident that this hadith is describing the journey from Muzdalifah onward. Therefore, we have considered the words “min Jam‘” to be correct; Muzdalifah is called “Jam‘.”
