Hadith 4472

Abdur Rahman bin Yazid says: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) at Muzdalifah when he performed both prayers with separate adhan and iqamah, and ate food between the two. Then, when dawn broke, he performed the Fajr prayer and after that said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These two prayers (Maghrib and Fajr) are performed at this place at times different from the usual. When people reach Muzdalifah, it is quite late (so Maghrib is performed late), and the Fajr prayer is performed at this time.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Arranging two calls to prayer (adhan) for Maghrib and Isha is an action that is restricted (mawquf) to Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu; therefore, the marfu' (attributed to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) narrations with a single adhan will always be given preference. The customary time for the Maghrib prayer is after sunset, but at this place (i.e., Muzdalifah), this prayer is performed at the time of Isha. Similarly, the customary time for the Fajr prayer is when the dawn (fajr) becomes clearly apparent, but in Muzdalifah, it is performed immediately after the break of dawn.
