Hadith 4436

عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: غَدَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ مِنَى حِينَ صَلَّى الصُّبْحَ فِي صَبِيحَةِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ حَتَّى أَتَى عَرَفَةَ فَنَزَلَ بِنَمِرَةَ وَهِيَ مَنْزِلُ الْإِمَامِ الَّذِي كَانَ يَنْزِلُ بِهِ بِعَرَفَةَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ عِنْدَ صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ، رَاحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ مُهَجِّرًا فَجَمَعَ بَيْنَ الظُّهْرِ وَالْعَصْرِ، ثُمَّ خَطَبَ النَّاسَ، ثُمَّ رَاحَ فَوَقَفَ عَلَى الْمَوْقِفِ مِنْ عَرَفَةَ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Fajr prayer in Mina on the day of Arafah, that is, the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah. After that, he proceeded to Arafah and stayed in the valley of Namirah, which is the place where the Imam stays upon reaching Arafah. When the time for Zuhr came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) came at midday and combined the Zuhr and Asr prayers and performed them together. After that, he delivered a sermon to the people. Thereafter, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood at the place of standing in Arafah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Near Arafat, there is a place called the Valley of Namirah (Wadi Namirah); this valley is not part of Arafat. After the sun had passed its zenith (zawal), the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to the Valley of Uranah (Wadi Uranah), and there he performed the Zuhr and Asr prayers and delivered the sermon. According to the majority of scholars, the Valley of Uranah is also not part of Arafat. From this hadith, it is established that the time for standing (wuquf) in Arafah begins after zawal, because before that time, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam remained in the Valley of Namirah. This is the position of Imam Abu Hanifah, Imam Shafi'i, and Imam Malik, but Imam Ahmad permits standing (wuquf) even before zawal. The latter opinion appears to be more correct; see also hadith number (4442).
