Hadith 4413

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), she says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Makkah Mukarramah on the fourth of Dhul-Hijjah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me while he was in a state of anger. I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Who has made you angry? May Allah cast him into Hell! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not know that I gave people a command, but they are hesitant to act upon it? The thought that has come to me now—if it had come to me earlier, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me, rather I would have bought it from here, and I too would have come out of Ihram like the people.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Respected readers! You already know that among this ummah, it was the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) who fulfilled the right of obedience to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to the highest degree. There are countless examples that reflect this reality. So then, what is the meaning and implication of their hesitation regarding the command of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as mentioned in the above hadith? Similar examples are also found in some other hadiths; for instance, when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) broke his fast during a journey, some Companions became hesitant.

The answer to this is that on such occasions, the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) understood that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), out of compassion for them and considering their hardship, had merely granted them a concession (rukhsah), whereas their own view was that they were prepared to carry out the act in full and did not feel the need for this concession. Then, when the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) clarified the matter completely—that this was not merely a concession, but in fact a command from him—they would then be ready to fulfill all the requirements of obedience to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

Do you not reflect that those very Companions who hesitated to exit the state of ihram after performing ‘umrah during Hajj, later on themselves issued fatwas for this very Hajj al-Tamattu‘?
