Kathir bin Jumhan says: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) between Safa and Marwah walking at a normal pace and not running. When I asked him about this, he said: If I run, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) running here, and if I walk at a normal pace, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) walking at a normal pace here as well, while now I have become old.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … There can be two meanings of this hadith of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu:
1. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to walk while descending and ascending the hill, and would run in the valley; Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma is referring to this walking and running. 2. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, while running in the valley, would also take a few steps walking.
Imam Tirmidhi said: The people of knowledge have declared running between Safa and Marwah to be recommended (mustahabb); if a person is unable to run, then he may walk.
Nowadays, some traces of the hills of Safa and Marwah remain, and the level ground has become much more extensive. The valley in which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to run now has green tubes installed, which are called the two green markers (milayn akhdarayn); therefore, one should run only between these green markers.
