Hadith 4388

In the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), it is mentioned that after performing Tawaf, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered two rak'ahs of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim, then completed the salam and proceeded towards Safa, … .
Narrated by Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Tawaf and in the first three circuits, made Raml from Hajar Aswad to Hajar Aswad. After completing the Tawaf, he (peace and blessings be upon him) offered two units of prayer, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Hajar Aswad, then went towards Zamzam, drank its water there and poured it on his head. After that, he (peace and blessings be upon him) again came to Hajar Aswad and performed Istilam, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Safa and said: I begin with that with which Allah Almighty has begun.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … From this hadith, it is understood that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the touching (istilam) of the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) twice: once after the two units (rak‘ahs) of circumambulation (tawaf) and once after drinking the water of Zamzam. However, apart from this narration, in all other narrations—including the hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu as narrated in Sahih Muslim—it is mentioned that after the two units (rak‘ahs) of tawaf, the Black Stone was touched only once, and after that, the sa‘i between Safa and Marwah was commenced. And Allah knows best.

The last sentence of this hadith is connected to this verse: {اِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَـرْوَۃَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللّٰہِ} … “Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” (Surah al-Baqarah: 158) Since Allah Almighty mentioned the name of Safa mountain first in this verse, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam also began the sa‘i from there.
