عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَجُلًا سَأَلَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا أَيُصِيبُ الرَّجُلُ امْرَأَتَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَطُوفَ بِالصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ؟ قَالَ: أَمَّا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَدِمَ فَطَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ ثُمَّ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ طَافَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ، ثُمَّ تَلَى: {لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ}
It is narrated from Amr bin Dinar that a man asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) whether a man can have intercourse with his wife before performing Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, he first performed Tawaf of the House of Allah, then offered two units of prayer, and after that, he performed Sa'i between Safa and Marwah. Then Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) recited this verse: {لَقَدْ کَانَ لَکُمْ فِیْ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰہِ أُسْـوَۃٌ حَسَنَۃٌ۔} (For you, in the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), is the best example.)

Benefits: … The wording of the narration in Sahih Muslim is as follows: Amr bin Dinar says: We asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhuma about a man who comes to perform ‘umrah and completes the circumambulation (tawaf) of the House of Allah; can he have intercourse with his wife before performing the sa‘i between Safa and Marwah? The gist of Sayyiduna Ibn Umar’s radi Allahu anhuma reply was that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam became lawful (i.e., exited the state of ihram) after completing both the tawaf and the sa‘i, therefore, following the example of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, one should not fulfill marital relations before becoming lawful (halal) after completing both rites.
