It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the noble Companions arrived in Makkah Mukarramah. Due to the fever of Yathrib, these people had become weak. The polytheists began to say among themselves that people are coming to them who have been made feeble and weak by fever. Meanwhile, Allah Almighty informed the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of their words. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the Companions to perform ramal (brisk walking) during tawaf. The polytheists sat towards Hatim watching them. Thus, the Muslims performed ramal during tawaf, but between Rukn Yamani and Hajar Aswad, they walked at a normal pace. Seeing them, the polytheists began to say: These are the people about whom you said that fever had made them weak; they are indeed very strong. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Out of compassion for the Companions, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not order them to perform ramal in all the circuits.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … This incident pertains to the ‘Umrah of Qada, and it was the first occasion after the Hijrah that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam entered the House of Allah. Raml (brisk walking with short steps) is performed from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) to the Yemeni Corner (Rukn Yamani), and from the Yemeni Corner to the Black Stone, normal walking is done. The reason for this was that the polytheists were seated towards the Hatim, so when the Muslims walked normally between these two corners, the polytheists could not see them. The wording of the narration in Sunan Abu Dawud is as follows: ((وَکَانُوْااِذَابَلَغُوْاالرُّکْنَالْیَمَانِیَّوَتَغَیَّبُوْامَشَوْاثُمَّیَطَّلِعُوْنیَرْمُلُوْنَ)) … When the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum reached the Yemeni Corner and became hidden from the polytheists, they would begin to walk normally, and then when (after the Black Stone) they appeared before them, they would start raml.
The structure of the Ka‘bah consists of the following four corners: (1) The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad), (2) The Yemeni Corner (Rukn Yamani), (3) The Levantine Corner (Rukn Shami), and (4) The Iraqi Corner (Rukn ‘Iraqi). The first two are called the “Yemeni Corners” (Ruknayn Yamaniyyayn), and the latter two are called the “Levantine Corners” (Ruknayn Shamiyyayn). The Hatim is towards the Levantine corners.
Although the reason for raml was that the Muslims might display their strength before the polytheists, and later this reason ceased to exist, raml was maintained as a Sunnah, as will be evident from the following narrations.
