Hadith 43

Abu Nu’aim (may Allah have mercy on him) says: A man or an old man, who was from among the people of Madinah, came and stayed with Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him). He said: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever meets Allah in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Him, then no sin will harm him because of that deed. But whoever dies in such a state that he associates someone with Allah, then no good deed will benefit him because of that deed.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The meaning of the phrase “because of this deed, no error will harm him” is that for such a person, no sin can permanently stand as a barrier between him and Paradise. However, it is possible that before entering Paradise, he may be punished due to that sin. This is further clarified by the following hadith:

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Instruct your dying ones to say La ilaha illallah, for indeed, whoever’s last words at the time of death are La ilaha illallah will enter Paradise one day, even if before that he is afflicted by whatever he is afflicted by (i.e., punishment).” (Sahih Ibn Hibban: 3004, Musnad al-Bazzar: 3)
