It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Buhaina (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had cupping performed on his head while in the state of ihram at the place of Lahy Jamal on the way to Makkah.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Luhy Jaml is the name of a place between Makkah al-Mukarramah and Madinah al-Munawwarah, and this location is closer to Madinah. Imam Nawawi said: There is consensus among the scholars that it is permissible to have cupping (hijama) done on the head or elsewhere due to an excuse, even if it requires cutting the hair, but due to cutting the hair, compensation (fidyah) will become obligatory. If there is no need to cut the hair, then no compensation will be required. The evidence for this is the statement of Allah Ta’ala: {فَمَنْ کَانَ مِنْکُمْ مَرِیْضًا اَوْ بِہٖاَذًی مِّنْ رَّأْسِہٖفَفِدْیَۃٌ} … “But whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head (necessitating shaving), then a compensation (fidyah) is required from him.” (Surah al-Baqarah: 196) The fact that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam had cupping performed on his head should be understood as being due to an excuse, because in this case, cutting the hair would be necessary in every situation. If a muhrim (one in the state of ihram) wishes to have cupping done without an excuse and his hair also needs to be cut, then due to the cutting of the hair, this act will be unlawful for him. However, if cupping is done without cutting the hair, and there is also no necessity, then this will be permissible and no compensation will be required for it.
