Imam Nafi’ says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) began to feel intense cold while in the state of Ihram, so he said: “Put some cloth over me.” I put a coat over him, but he removed it and said: “You are putting such a cloth over me which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the Muhrim from wearing.”

Brief Explanation
Benefits: ... Simply placing the garment over oneself does not constitute wearing it. It appears that Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), out of caution, did not even like to drape a coat over himself, or perhaps he understood that the garments from which a muhrim (person in the state of ihram) is prohibited are not permissible for him to use in any form whatsoever. In any case, the original prohibition is specifically regarding wearing, so as to prevent every kind of use. (Abdullah Rafiq)
