Imam Nafi’, whose wife was the umm walad of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) bought a slave girl on the way to Makkah Mukarramah and, after freeing her, ordered her to perform Hajj with him. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) searched for shoes for her, but they could not be found, so he cut the socks below the ankles. Ibn Ishaq says: When I mentioned this to Ibn Shihab, he said that Salim has narrated that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to do this, but later, when Safiyyah bint Abi Ubaid informed Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to permit socks for women, upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) abandoned this practice.
