Hadith 424

The wife of the Messenger, Sayyida Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by some men of the Quraysh who were dragging a goat like a donkey. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "If only you had taken off its skin." They said: "It is dead (carrion)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Water and qaraz will purify it."

Brief Explanation
Benefits: ... Qaraz: This is a tree similar to the acacia, whose leaves are used for tanning leather. From these narrations, it is understood that the hide of a dead animal becomes pure by tanning, but it does not become lawful (halal) through this process; it remains unlawful (haram). In this way, it will not be permissible to consume any part of such leather. While explaining the ruling regarding the leftovers of a cat, we have already clarified that it is possible for something to be unlawful (haram), yet still be pure (tahir), such as the cat itself. The unlawfulness (hurmah) of something does not necessarily entail its impurity (najasah); it will only be considered impure when the Shari‘ah explicitly clarifies it.
