Hadith 4226

Bakr bin Abdullah Muzani says: I heard Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the talbiyah for both Hajj and Umrah together. Then, when I informed Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) of this, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaimed the talbiyah only for Hajj. Later, when I met Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), I mentioned to him what Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. He replied: In reality, you people consider us only as children, whereas the truth is that I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the talbiyah in this way: ((Labbayka ‘umratan wa hajj-an)) (I am present for Umrah and for Hajj).

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … The phrases "Labbayka ‘umratan wa hajj-an," "Labbayka ‘umratan," and "Labbayka hajj-an" are uttered at the time of initiating the ihram (state of consecration) to express one's intention. After this, they may also be said during the period of ihram. Both statements of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar and Sayyiduna Anas are correct; in reality, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu was not aware of the hadith of Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu.
