Hadith 4220

It is narrated from Nafi‘ that Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting the Talbiyah with these words: ((Labbayka, Allahumma Labbayk...)) (I am present, O Allah! I am present, You have no partner, I am present, all praise and blessings are for You, and sovereignty is also for You, You have no partner). Nafi‘ says: Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In this Talbiyah, I also add these words: ((Labbayka, Labbayka wa Sa‘dayka)) (I am present, I am present, and I am present, and all goodness is in Your hands, and desire and action are also towards You.)

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … “Labbayk” is a dual form, and because it is annexed (mudaf) to the pronoun “ka,” the dual “nun” has been omitted. It is derived from the root “labba yalubbu,” which means: to stand, to remain, to be present, to stay firm. The dual form is generally used to indicate two things, but in “labbayk,” the dual is not for two, rather it is used for emphasis, abundance, and exaggeration, meaning: O my Allah! I am present before You again and again, I am constantly residing and present, and I am clinging to Your obedience. The same applies to “sa’dayk,” except its meaning is: ((assisting in Your obedience after assisting)), and “musā‘adah” means help, assistance, strengthening, and support.

Dear readers! Keep in mind that the specific words of the talbiyah taught by the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are before you. The additional words used by Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu were not intended to imply that he considered the words of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam incomplete or insufficient, while the Shari‘ah does not require that the person in the state of ihram (muhrim) only recite those remembrances which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam practically taught. In reality, the matter is that the muhrim considers himself bound to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam in every matter, but sometimes he finds it appropriate to remember Allah Ta‘ala according to his own temperament. This is the case here: Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu adhered to the prescribed talbiyah, and after reciting it, he would also repeat his own words. This is exactly like how, after reciting the talbiyah, we begin to praise Allah Ta‘ala and supplicate in our own languages. In hadith number (4123), it has already been mentioned that people would add the words “Dha al-Ma‘arij” to the talbiyah in the presence of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
