Hadith 4203

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that both Nikah Mut'ah and Hajj Tamattu' were permitted during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) forbade us from them, we refrained.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Nikah Mut‘ah: To contract marriage with a woman for a specified period. This form of marriage was declared unlawful during the lifetime of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) itself, and there is consensus among the Muslims regarding its prohibition. However, some people did not become aware of its prohibition and continued to consider it permissible as before. When Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) became aware of this matter, he reiterated its prohibition through an official proclamation. But those who were not aware of the full details thought that it was Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radi Allahu anhu) who had declared this marriage unlawful. Further clarification regarding Nikah Mut‘ah will come in the Book of Marriage (Kitab al-Nikah). The permissibility of Hajj Tamattu‘ is also a matter of consensus; it has already been mentioned what Sayyiduna ‘Umar’s (radi Allahu anhu) intention was in prohibiting it.
