عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْتَشِرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ سَأَلَ ابْنَ عُمَرَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ يَتَطَيَّبُ عِنْدَ إِحْرَامِهِ؟ فَقَالَ: لَأَنْ أَطَّلِيَ بِقَطِرَانٍ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ أَنْ أَفْعَلَهُ، قَالَ: فَسَأَلَ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهَا فَأَخْبَرَهَا بِقَوْلِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا فَقَالَتْ: يَرْحَمُ اللَّهُ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، كُنْتُ أُطَيِّبُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ يَطُوفُ عَلَى نِسَائِهِ ثُمَّ يُصْبِحُ مُحْرِمًا يَنْتَضِحُ طِيبًا
Muhammad bin Muntashir asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about applying perfume at the time of Ihram. He said: If I were to apply sulphur, that would be more preferable to me than applying perfume. Then he asked this issue to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and also told her what Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. So she said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abdur Rahman. I myself used to apply perfume to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would go to his wives, and when he would enter into Ihram in the morning, the fragrance of perfume would be emanating from him.
Brief Explanation
Benefits: … In reality, Sayyiduna Umar, Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar, and Sayyiduna Uthman were not of the opinion that perfume should be applied before entering the state of ihram (ritual consecration) in such a manner that its effect would persist even after assuming ihram. However, the ahadith mentioned at the beginning of this chapter and their explanation require that applying perfume in this manner is permissible.
