Hadith 4151

عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا: يَا أَبَا الْعَبَّاسِ عَجَبًا لِاخْتِلَافِ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي إِهْلَالِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ أَوْجَبَ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ النَّاسِ بِذَلِكَ، إِنَّهَا إِنَّمَا كَانَتْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَجَّةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَمِنْ هُنَالِكَ اخْتَلَفُوا، خَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَاجًّا، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى فِي مَسْجِدِهِ بِذِي الْحُلَيْفَةِ رَكْعَتَيْهِ أَوْجَبَ فِي مَجْلِسِهِ، فَأَهَلَّ بِالْحَجِّ حِينَ فَرَغَ مِنْ رَكْعَتَيْهِ، فَسَمِعَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ أَقْوَامٌ فَحَفِظُوا عَنْهُ ثُمَّ رَكِبَ فَلَمَّا اسْتَقَلَّتْ بِهِ نَاقَتُهُ أَهَلَّ وَأَدْرَكَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ أَقْوَامٌ، وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ النَّاسَ إِنَّمَا كَانُوا يَأْتُونَ أَرْسَالًا، فَسَمِعُوهُ حِينَ اسْتَقَلَّتْ بِهِ نَاقَتُهُ يُهِلُّ، فَقَالُوا: إِنَّمَا أَهَلَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ اسْتَقَلَّتْ بِهِ نَاقَتُهُ، ثُمَّ مَضَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا عَلَا عَلَى شَرَفِ الْبَيْدَاءِ، أَهَلَّ وَأَدْرَكَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ أَقْوَامٌ، فَقَالُوا: إِنَّمَا أَهَلَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ عَلَا عَلَى شَرَفِ الْبَيْدَاءِ، وَأَيْمُ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ أَوْجَبَ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ، وَأَهَلَّ حِينَ اسْتَقَلَّتْ بِهِ نَاقَتُهُ، وَأَهَلَّ حِينَ عَلَا عَلَى شَرَفِ الْبَيْدَاءِ فَمَنْ أَخَذَ بِقَوْلِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَهَلَّ فِي مُصَلَّاهُ إِذَا فَرَغَ مِنْ رَكْعَتَيْهِ
Saeed bin Jubair says: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): Abu al-Abbas! I am amazed that even regarding this place, the companions differ as to where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have the most knowledge about this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed only one Hajj, and that is why this difference has arisen. The detail is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with the intention of Hajj. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Dhul-Hulaifah and finished offering two rak‘ahs of prayer in his mosque, he recited the Talbiyah from there and donned the Ihram for Hajj. Those who heard this Talbiyah from him remembered it. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his ride and the she-camel stood up straight, he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah again. Some people heard the Talbiyah for the first time then. The fact is that people were coming in different groups and caravans. In any case, when the she-camel stood up straight with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on it, at that time some people heard the Talbiyah from him and said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah after the she-camel stood up. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded further, and when he reached the hill of Bayda, he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah again. Those who heard the Talbiyah from him there said that he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah upon reaching the hill of Bayda. By Allah! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) started the Talbiyah from the place where he had prayed. After that, when his she-camel stood up straight, he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Talbiyah again, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached the hill of Bayda, he recited the Talbiyah then as well. Thus, those who have adopted the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) recite the Talbiyah after finishing the two rak‘ahs of prayer.

Brief Explanation
Benefits: … Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma has presented the best reconciliation in this difference among the noble Companions; the reason for this difference is the lack of knowledge of another hadith. The coming narrations should be understood in the light of this reconciliation. By “his mosque” in Dhul-Hulayfah is meant the place where the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed prayer; later, a mosque was constructed at that location.
